Acadia National Park consists most of the area of the “Mount Desert Island “and other smaller islands in the area. Acadia National Park is really a nature’s gift with unspoiled scenic beauty everywhere. Some 30,500 acres of area makes the national park. The area that constitutes the national park was spotted by Samuel de Champlain in 17th century. The main features of the land are almost the same after the passage of centuries. An architect, observing the sheer beauty of the area came up with the idea of preserving the land by making it a national Park.
President Woodrow Wilson was the first person to endorse the idea and declared it the national treasure. Initially the National Park was to be called Lafayette National Park however later the name was changed to Acadia National Park. It would not have been in the present position, had it not received the attention of John D Rickfeller, who constructed bridges, passages and rails in the area. Most of the Acadia National Park as we see it today is due to the efforts of Rockfeller.
A fire in 1940’s burnt down everything in thousands of kilometers of the area. The restoration of the natural beauty of the park started and again Rockfeller family took the burden on their shoulders.
Park is the home to some 40 rare species of the animals. It is said that some rare species that were found in the park have become extinct now.
Recently a campaign has started to stop the aircrafts from flying in the area of Acadia National park to preserve the pristine beauty.
