The burl is a type of tree growth that is not in the conventional shape of branches. The growth of grains is in the rounded shape around the trunk with knots of dormant buds. The rounded accumulation of knots around the trunk of the tree shows that it is experiencing internal stress due to which the buds are not able to lacerate the trunk causing its shape to be deformed.

The deformation of the tree may be due to the environmental factors or human factors. Many burls on the tree grow under the ground. Such burls can not be seen until the tree falls or rooted out. Burls are hidden under the surface of bark even if they are beneath the ground. Insects or mold that causes the decay of the tree are the most important factors behind the process due to which burls are formed.

The phenomenon is more frequently found in redwoods in which burls may attain huge size. The huge burls may lead to further growth of new redwood trees when other conditions e.g. moisture is also present. The most significant examples of burls can be found in Port McNeill, British Columbia. One such huge burl was found in Tamworth, Australia. The size of this burl is around six feet with bizarre shape of a trombone. This burl was removed and then transferred to a public school of Australia. The removal caused a lot of hue and cry from the environmentalist public. The burl wood enjoys great demand by the people who want to use it in making furniture.
