Codex Gigas

The Codex Gigas (Codex Gigas means ‘giant book’) is the major existing medieval manuscript in the whole world. It is considered that Codex Gigas is created in the early 13th century in the “Benedictine monastery of Podlazice” in Bohemia (modern Czech Republic). All collection of Codex Gigas was stolen by Swedish army as plunder during Thirty years war in 1648 and now preserved at the “National Library of Sweden” in Stockholm. Codex Gigas is also known as “Devil`s Bible” because of a huge illustration of the devil on the inside and the legend surrounding its creation.

The codex Gigas is enclosed in a wooden folder, which is covered with leather and decorated with metal. At 92 cm or36.2 inches tall, 50 cm or 19.7 inches wide and 22 cm or 8.6 inches thick, it is the biggest recognized “Medieval Manuscript”. Codex Gigas was initially contained 320 vellum sheets, although eight of these were then removed. No one knew that who removed the pages from Codex Gigas and for what purpose but it seems likely that they contained the monastic rules of the Benedictines. Codex Gigas has weighs of nearly 75 kg or165 lbs and the vellum is collected of “Calf Skin” (or donkey according to some sources) from about 160 animals. Codex Gigas is presumed to be the largest surviving “European Manuscript” and it contains a great, full page representation of the Devil.
