It was the Colum Mccann’s night. Colum Mccann’s novel “Let the Great World Spin” won the prestigious National Book Award for fiction category. And what a great novel that is! A puff of fresh air in the stagnant literary field. Amzon has regarded the novel as one of the best books; Oprah is full of praises, all the literary world is talking about it. As the prize was announced, judges called the book as “a gravity defying act”. Colum Mccann’s novel is one of the books you wish would never end.
The novel paints a picture of corroding New York; the strokes of brush are the lives of 10 people that make the weave of the novel. The picture is being painted on the canvass of 9/11. And the contrasting colors consist of land mark walk of Philip Petit on the rope between two towers which were destroyed in the attack.
The brush starts its strokes and women are busy talking to relive the burden that life has put on their shoulders. Another color is picked from the palette and this one as much having the master touch of Colum Mccann as others, and the women see the man walking high above in the skies but then again busy themselves in their talk. A white stroke there and black one here joined by the brown area. A holy man in corrupted woman to fulfill what destiny has required from him. Strokes all different and yet all bound by the common thread that master has willed them to be there.
