Down’s syndrome is due to genetic disorder of the child. The genetic disorder slows down the mental as well as physical growth. Now a question arises what genetic disorder cases the disease. The Down’s syndrome is the association of extra genetic material within the child when he was first conceived in the womb of the mother.
Biologically speaking, a normal child inherits 23 chromosomes from each of his parents and total chromosomes become 46. The Down’s syndrome is caused when a child, from either side of his parents, receives 24 chromosomes to make the total of 47 chromosomes. One extra chromosome hiders the development process of the child. In 1887, Langdon Down of England made the description of the disease. Later on the “extra material” was held responsible for the above-mentioned disorder. The proposition was proved when an extra chromosome was detected in the patient’s genetic material.
There is no cure for the disorder but it can be identified and prevented during pregnancy. The age of conceiving mother is also regarded as another factor of the disorder. The mothers, who conceive a child at the age of 35 or more, have the probability of the disease with 1 in 350. At the age of 30, the figure is 1 out of 900. At the age of forty, the chances of Down’s syndrome rise to 1 in 100. As there is no cure for the disease, women with 16 to 18 week of pregnancy can have the test called as Amniocentesis to make sure whether their baby carries Down’s syndrome or not.
