Quicksilver in the memory of Eddie Aikau 2009 is currently being held at the North Shore of Oaho, Waimea Bay. The event is organized every year to pay a tribute to the legendary surfer Eddie Aikau. Every year, world‘s top surfing professionals are invited to be a part of the event to ride the big waves. The surfer who provides highest level of performance wins the event. Started in 1984, this event has become one of the largest surfing competitions of the sports world with 28 professional participating surfers from around the world. Quicksilver In the Memory of Eddie Aikau is an annual event which is held to pay tribute to a renowned surfer Eddie Aikau, as the name suggests. Eddie Aikau was a Hawaiian surfer who also served as lifeguard at Waimea Bay in the island of Oahu. During his service as a lifeguard, Eddie saved many people from drowning in the high, harsh waves of the bay. Due to his excellent surfing skills, Eddie was awarded with several honors and was declared the winner of Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1977. He was named the lifeguard of the year in 1971. In 1978, a voyaging society started a voyage to follow the ancient route of the Polynesian migration. Eddie joined the crew. During their voyage, the boat started leaking. In order to get help, Eddie started sailing on his surfboard toward Lanai. The rest of the crew was saved by US Coast Guards but Eddie could never be found. He lost in the waters of the sea.
