GLSEN is an American organization which supports educational rights to gay, lesbians, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. GLSEN promotes and supports activities which help prevent discrimination and harassment of individuals due to their sexuality. It also helps the teachers and encourages them to learn methods to handle LGBT individuals in their schools.
GLSEN was founded in 1990 as Gay and Lesbian Independent School Teachers Network (GLSTN) with a cluster of 70 homosexual educators who volunteered to work for the organization. It was a time when there were not many Gay and Lesbian Alliances and not much awareness was present among educators on how to help LGBT students. GLSTN became a national organization in 1995 and started organizing national teacher’s conferences in different states on yearly basis. Today, more than 3,000 gay and lesbian alliances are registered with GL SEN and it has hosted 8 national conferences. GLSEN is also a sponsor of National Day of Silence and has been running the ad campaign Think b4 you Speak.
Think b4 You Speak is a national campaign which supports prevention of bullying and harassing of individuals. The campaign was created to end the use of discriminating vocabulary. Its ads features slogans like ‘Who Are you Calling a Gay?’ and ‘Who are You Calling a Fag?’
GLSEN has established a separate website for Think b4 You Speak campaign from where the campaign banners could be downloaded and shared with others.
