Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust Remembrance Day was observed on January 27, 2010 in memory of the 6 million Jews exterminated by the German Nazis during the World War II. The Israeli President Shimon Peres will deliver a speech in Hebrew before the German Parliament. Some of the holocaust survivors are invited to the parliament to witness the historical moment. The insiders have reported that Peres is going to memorize his grandfather who was a victim of holocaust.

Israeli President is on an official visit to Germany for the betterment of Israeli-German relations and to commemorate the holocaust victims. A commemoration ceremony was held at the Berlin railway station and candles were lit for the six million Jews.

The internationally recognized Holocaust Remembrance day is observed on the anniversary of Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It is called Yom Hashoah coming from a Hebrew word shoah that means disaster or calamity. It is observed on 27 Nisan according to Hebrew calendar which is eight days before the Israeli day of Independence.

Holocaust Remembrance Day was legalized in 1951 by the signature of Israeli PM Ben Gurion and the Israeli President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi

A state ceremony is held at Warsaw Ghetto plaza in Jerusalem on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Six candles are lighted by the holocaust survivors, one for a million Jews. President and Prime Minister give speeches and the Rabbis offer prayers.

Other ceremonies are held at schools, military bases and in Israeli community.

Holocaust Remembrance Day is also observed all over the world by the Jewish communities. A memorial service is held at Auschwitz, Poland.
