The infamous Watergate Scandal June 17, 1974 and the nine o clock Watergate burglaries of Saturday mornings.

It was the 17th of June, 1972 when five burglars went inside the Democratic National Committees. It was a fine Saturday morning. Around nine o’ clock in the morning, the guard at the complex, Frank Wills, noticed some tapes at the door locks. At first he removed them and ignored them. Later in the morning, he saw that someone has removed the locks from the door. Frank Wills immediately called the police and five men were hiding inside the Democratic National Committee’s office were arrested. The five men were charged with burglary. They were also charged with interception of telephone calls and other official communications.

This incident which happened on the morning of June 17, 1972 was a second attempt of telephone communication interception in the DNC’s office. A case was filed against the five arrested men for violating privacy and federal wiretapping laws and a grand jury heard the case. The consequent incidents led to some

historical moments for United States. The then US president Richard Nixon spent a lofty sum of money to release the arrested men and to remove the charges from their civil profiles. The money was paid from White House’s fund through an illegal channel. He urged the Federal Bureau of Investigation to close the case file and made cover-up plans for their convicted crime. President’s such activities made others suspicious. He had to face extreme criticism and arraignment from Congress which made President Nixon to resign from his presidency.

President Nixon is the only US president who has resigned from presidency. Who could know that a minor crime on that Saturday morning would make the US President to leave his post for good.
