Kendra and Maliyah Herrin
Kendra and Maliyah Herrin are the former conjoined twins; they were born at University of Utah Medical Centre in Salt Lake City, Utah on 26th of February, 2002. Kendra and Maliyah are the first set conjoined twins to be separated to share a kidney. They were separated in August 2006. After separation surgery Kendra Herrin retained their shared kidney whereas Maliyah Herrin undergoes “dialysis” until she was transplanted with a kidney denoted by her own mother in April, 2007.
Medical ethicists in the United States and in Europe discussed whether it was ethical to separate the twins due to the further risk to Maliyah Herrin before the separation surgery. But their doctors and family alleged that Kendra and Maliyah would be able to get better chance to live their normal life through separation surgery.
Kendra and Maliyah Herrin started their lives as conjoined twins of a shape termed Ischiopagus (Type D)/Omphalopagus (Type B) Conjoined Twins. It means that Kendra and Maliyah Herrin were joined at the pelvis and abdomen; they had among them pelvis, abdomen, liver, large intestine, kidney and 2 legs (each twin controlling one leg).
Even though separation of the majority conjoined twins is more probable to be successful at a much initial age. It is not usually possible to Transplantation of a kidney in children than younger age 4. Kendra and Maliyah Herrin have been the topic of many news articles and also have made appearances on TV talk shows including the “Oprah Winfrey Show”.
