Maine repeals gay marriages. Maine is probably the 6th state where gay marriages have been allowed but the locals have repealed the law according to which gay and lesbian couples are not allowed to marry. Maine thus becomes 31st state which has refused to accept these laws.

On Tuesday referendum took place to take public opinion on the matter. The voters were asked to give their opinion about the law which allows same-sex marriages. The law was passed six months before by Maine legislature and was signed by state governor John Baldacci. 83 percent votes have been counted and the results revealed that 53 percent people are against the law while 47 percent supported it. The voting was held by a team which ran the campaign to oppose gay marriage. The campaign Stand for Marriage called for rally in Portland and announced their victory in the polls soon after midnight. Campaign manager, Marc Mutty, commented on the results and said that they have ’struggled’ and hence they won. While the pro-gay marriages group says that they will continue their efforts people their right and believe that ‘it has always been for love and family’.

It has been reported that both the campaigners spent millions of dollars to spread the word through email, phone calls, rallies, and ads.

Maine is the only state where a statewide poll was carried out. The other five states accepted the law without any resistance. Some other states accept gay-marriages of other states but do not allow it.
