People are very curious about the results of “referendum” on gay-marriage in Maine. Even the people who are strong advocates of human rights are viewing the gay legislation with abhorring eyes. Although United States of America is considered as the most developed nation of the world yet only very few states have legalized the gay marriage through legislation. The gay marriage legislation was made in May in Maine but it was challenged in the court of law due to which the law is in the state of abeyance. The application against the gay marriage legislation was forwarded by conservatives. Eventually the legislation was made contingent upon the results of “popular vote” on gay marriage. The proponents of the gay marriage legislation are of the view that let alone the speaking about the gay marriage, how come the issue in hand is being decided by a popular vote in a country that flaunts itself as the most modern country in the world. The advocates of gay marriage are of the view that majority of people is not gay and it is ridiculous to expect unbiased results from a population where gays are in minority.

They blame that by going for general voting on this minority-issue, the courts have shifted the burden of injustice on the “popular vote”. How can a normal person feel like a gay while giving his opinion through voting? On the other hand, the opponents of gay marriage are strongly condemning the legalization of gay marriages and asking the question: “How much development has the country attained as far as certain moral and religious values are concerned? They are of the view that such legislation, if comes in to force, will become a stigma on the so-called “flaunting status” of U.S. in the international community. The opponents and the conservative party are expecting victory in the proposed popular vote.
