Just a few days back we reported the story of the huge truck that slipped on the newly opened part of the Bay Bridge spilling tons of goods on the road. In a developing story one of the cables supporting the mammoth structure has snapped.

The falling cable struck a truck and shattered the windshield and some part of the roof. In the pictures a massive cable can be seen on the road with lots of debris around. Helicopters taking an aerial view of the accident reported a part of the cable was also suspended in the air.

The fault occurred just near the area where the earlier accident had taken place. The area is regarded as the S-Curve and has recently been opened for the traffic.

The cable and rods that have come off the structure are part of the portion that had undergone repairs recently and authorities had thoroughly checked it a few days ago.

As the rods and supporting cable snapped and fell to the ground the traffic became to a standstill. Though the authorities wanted to close the bridge for traffic immediately to assess the extent of the damage and the factors resulting in the accident, long line of jammed traffic made it almost impossible. It was decided to open one lane for traffic to clear the jammed vehicles.

However starting from Wednesday the bridge would remain closed for all vehicles.

The decision is sure to cause massive traffic jams. Extra trains are planned to share the traffic load.
